TELECOMMUNICATIONS

In 1990 the Government passed the Telecommunications Act 1990.

Since its passage there has been substantial progress in the telecommunications industry in Guyana.

There are two primary licensed providers of cellular services in Guyana, Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company Ltd (GT&T) (www.gtt.co.gy) and Digicel (www.digicelguyana.com)

However the industry’s full potential has been stymied by the monopoly on international and hard line traffic in Guyana being held by one company coupled with its relatively high rates for international communication.

In March 2007 the Government of Guyana hosted an ICT Conference at which the challenges facing the industry were explored and examined.

The Government is eager to attract further investment in this area. Not only is the Government providing attractive incentives for investors (e.g. tax holidays), it is also taking steps to improve the regulatory framework for sectors utilizing ICT for services targeting domestic and international markets through the development of policy strategies for ICT and E-commerce.
